The innovation system is seen as the environment for corporate innovation activities composed of a multitude of heterogeneous actors jointly and interactively contributing to the individual innovation processes. A sound understanding of the composition of the innovation system, the rationales of the actors and the emergent dynamics within the system is crucial for rational innovation and technology policy making. This also encompasses the evaluation of government intervention into the innovation system.

 

In the context of Innovation Systems & Policy I carried out a number of collaborative research projects which were all endowed by external funding.

Academic Entrepreneurship in Tyrol (2009-2010)

The project investigates the determinants of academic entrepreneurship. It identifies the required areas for governmental support of academic entrepreneurs and highlights the effects of certain educational measures.

Pattern of innovation activities among Finnish firms (2002-2004)

This project analyzes certain aspects of the Finnish innovation system. Microeconometric methods are employed on data from Statistics Finland.

Secondary analyses of policy evaluations (2005-2006)

The research suggests an approach to integrate existing policy evaluation to get a systemic view on the effects of innovation policy.

This project investigates the effects of the Swiss participation with the European Framework Program FP5 and FP6.

This paper explores how sources of behavioural differentiation derived from the literature on industrial knowledge bases and technological regimes condition the degree of involvement in international innovation collaboration. We find this to be significantly influenced by the nature of knowledge and the cumulativeness of knowledge development, the active use of measures to protect intellectual property, the inherent need to innovate and the opportunity to generate sales from this activity.
